Pollinator Project

Hello SLA neighbors. Would you like to be part of a larger project to create a flyway for Monarch and other butterflies and pollinators? We have some perfect continuous settings;

Under power lines around lakes, common areas or just your backyard. There are plants for many environments, including partial shade, sun, sandy or fertile soil or mixed, wet feet, drier ground… The Xerces and other environmental organizations educate and support groups interested and willing to set up flyways for pollinators. Two Master Gardeners of Camden County offered to help with this set up.

Did you know that 70% of the monarch butterflies have disappeared from the Central and Eastern US since 1990, 90% form the West Coast. This is just one species due to reduction of their habitat and use of harmful insecticides. With the fires in Canada this year the numbers are expected to be much worse. Monarchs actually must have access to milkweed to reproduce. Ingesting the leaves makes them toxic to birds.

Who:

Residents who back up to lakes and to power lines
Residents who want to include appropriate plants on their yards free from chemical treatments
Residents willing to monitor and water plants on common grounds and berms to insure the new plants take hold
Parents who would like to introduce their kids to this conservation project
Master Gardeners in Gibbsboro have offered to guide us.

How:

Organize volunteers
Establish areas to be planted – make a map
Research what native plants and milkweed do best in types of sun, soil and drought/wet conditions.

When:

Seeds can be planted in November and December
Plants can be planted in the Spring
Getting organized and recruiting can start immediately.
